I've subitted a simple test case (1 page, with gui) that
demonstraights the problem, but so far I haven't heard anything
back...

Actually if you have the current CVS there is a test-references
directory which is full of reference images as pngs (for all the
sample files, all the sample/test files as well as the official SVG
Basic Effectivity (svgbe) test suite). We use these images to ensure
that we don't break much (can't say anything:) when we make changes to
Batik.
