Actually, my understanding is that this isn't the case, simple
paths are generaly transcribed as paths into the PDF with full
geometric precision.
If you make use of filters or gradients you content will probably
be rasterized at 72DPI, I would ask on the FOP lists if that can be
changed. Batik is fully capable of rendering content at any desired
resolution (allowing for system resources of course).
