Unicode character set

Does Batik (SVG ?) support Unicode characters ? If I have a text with a
special characters (like o circumflex) the characters is not rendered. I
don't want to translate all of my special characters with the row Unicode
code (like ô) because I must also support special characters set like
Cyrillic.
