If you watch it doesn't put up GUI stuff but it does connect to
the native graphics engine (X Display, Quartz).

It has never been possible with Java under UNIX. All versions of
Java (prior to 1.4) require an X display in order to do any graphics,
please see archives for the available workarounds.
