For animation an applet could sometimes be smaller. And one could script the 
graphic. Also it would be possible to change parts of the graphic (e.g. the 
text of an button) by setting params of the applet. And the graphic would be 
resizeable and text extractable. Of course applets have many disadvantages, 
but as long as most browsers can't display SVG directly it may be helpful for 
some cases. 
BTW how is the status for SVG->Flash & Flash->SVG converters?
