I think a JavaWebStart solution would be great, but there are also some non-batik possibilities:
There are Adobe SVG Viewers for Linux and Solaris, they are beta (=officially unsupported) but pretty solid: http://www.adobe.com/svg/viewer/install/old.html It's possible to use the ASV in Netscape 6 but it's buggy. There is also a Mozilla SVG project http://www.mozilla.org/projects/svg/ And there is nothing wrong with rasterizing on the server. Depends how important it is to have SVG on the client side. You could also create PDF on the server, and persist the vectors but deliver them in a non-SVG format.
