That would work, but it's not an acceptable solution right now.
        Due to our server configuration with SAN's and stuff,
        It must be a hard coded full path.

Did you try a relative path, rather than an absolute one? 

for example, 

xlink:href="..\batik\batik-1.1.1\test.jpg"
