Part of the problem is the scope of the Book would be rather
large. SVG is a 700 Page Specification, Batik is 1/4 Million LOC, and
swing alone already has a number of 3" books about it. :)
It has been discussed but on of the major contributors to Batik,
Vincent Hardy, already wrote an excellent book on Java2D, "Java 2D API
Graphics", after talking with him about what that took - I know I'm
scared ;)

It is true that Batik 1.5 (dynamic support) is still officially
Beta (there is 1.1.1 static which is not 'beta'), however if you look
at what is implemented - aside from SMIL - Batik is generally more
complete than other SVG viewers. I also think that generally
stability is excellent - we are also on the verge of making a Batik
1.5 final.
