I'm glad to see this unresolved issue surfacing now, again. With my university workload finished as of this past Friday, I'm back on full time development, on my own project.
I have a number of concerns still lingering about Batik, which I can not truly finalize if it will not run on my system. My configuration is OS X 10.2.6, Java 1.4.1_01 and Batik 1.5. I will get the latest CVS version tomorrow and give that a try...
I would think that some one in the inner circle of Batik developers would have access to the OS X platform, test and run it there on each major release. Especially knowing, that OS X is an excellent leading-edge graphic platform, where Batik should run very well and some of the more innovative software developers choose work as well.
This way Batik can be put to good use, instead of fading out of memory.

any idea what could be wrong? I have to admit that I don't know anything about
Fonts on MacOSX, since I just recently switched from Linux/Windows to MacOSX and
am pretty new on Mac ...
