This is why I said that what you wanted was the dependency list for a rendering. Then you can check if any of the dependencies are newer than the cached rendering (done outside of Batik) if so you need to rerender (using Batik) - in the processes generating an updated dependency list.
ah, okay - got it. Though the dependency list may change too.
