Corel Draw can export using basic shapes (rects, ellipses, circles, etc.)

Also it was reported that Illustrator 11 will do the same.

I wouldn't expect the filesize to shrink dramatically, if you just replace
path-elements by basic shapes.

Depending on your graphics - if you have a lot of reusable objects, it might
help to organize them as symbols. I found both Corel and Illustrator quite good
in the support of symbols, styles, patterns, gradients, etc.

You might also check the export options of Illustrator. You should uncheck the
preserve illustrator editing options (since this doesn't add to the visible
content of the SVGs, but only keeps certain settings and states of the program
with the file) - also you shouldn't include the optimize for ASV options and
similar things.

I can't complain about bloated SVG filesize with Illustrator. I think they did a
good job. There is always room for improvements. But it's generally of good quality.

If you disagree, show us/or better the Adobe people, where they should improve.
