Developing a simple SVG editor

Hello to everibody! I'm an engineering of computer science student. For 
my study I want to develop a simple SVG editor in Java using batik 
libraries. I've any questions:

1) How can I select an object in a JSVGCanvas?
2) How can I do to use JSVGCanvas to render only static SVG ( excluding 
animated svg for example )?

There are any tutorial or exmples that I can use to learn to use batik 
libraries?
