Well I can't see the problem with the current version of Batik. I don't know if this is because it's too subtle or it has already been fixed. I would suggest getting a CVS copy of Batik or one of the nightly builds and testing with that (there have been a few bug fixes in this general area so it's probably that it's been fixed).
