That is a swing layout issue, setup the container for the Canvas to fix it's size (sorry I'm not particularly versed in swing so I can't tell you have to do that off the top of my head).

Well, it has to redraw for any resize event (otherwise there will be blank parts on the sides). I suspect you are objecting to the 'resize' of the content when the window is resized.
This can be turned off by calling setRecenterOnResize(false).
