IMO, this was a legitimate attempt and definitely not frowned upon. Maybe you were just a bit unfortunate as this happened around New Year with many people having the heads elsewhere. Offering money to get a particular job done is one of the things you can do to support an open source projects if you can't write a patch yourself for whatever reason (time, skills etc.).
