Looking for examples of dynamically manipulating text.

I'm interested in using Batik to write a text editor, and would  
appreciate it if anyone could point me to examples of how Batik is  
best used to dynamically manipulate text (from Java, not JavaScript).  
I have the book on order, but it's not here yet, and I'm impatient :-).
