Strange delay with animations starting in applet

I have managed to get Batik working with an applet but for some reason I
find that when I serve up the applet using an application server (GlassFish)
on the local host, the animation starts several seconds after the static
objects are rendered.  If I serve up the applet using just the local file
system then the animation starts immediately.

 

Any thoughts why this would be so?
