What version of bbdb are you using?
The more recent versions (>= 2.1 ?) support for "duplicate records"
was added. Which is what BBDB used to call two people with the same name :)

From gnus and VM it should look the person up with a combination
of name and e-mail (assuming both are available, if one of them is
missing it's ussually the 'name' not the 'e-mail', in which case it
tries it's best with what it has). If the name has a record in BBDB
but the e-mail used to look up the record isn't listed in the 'net'
field BBDB will prompt if you want the e-mail added to the name
(so far all _very_ good behaviour IMHO).
What you need to look out for though is if the existing record
represents your friend but the new e-mail address is for some yahoo in
GNUs, if you say yes you have "merged" the two records (not great
behaviour, but you asked for it :). From then on both the GNUS poster
and the friend will be auto-updating fields in the merged record.
So my advise is to check if the record(s) has 'mixed' email
addresses as described above. If so 'split' the record (same name
different 'nets'), and be a bit more careful about adding a new 'net'
to a record.
Of course the above is really just describing how things are
intended to work and may have no bearing on reality. In which case
please let us/me know and we/I'll see what can be done about fixing
it...
