If I have a mail-alias field defined in the BBDB entries, I'm able to put
the cursor in the To: field of outgoing mail and then do C-c C-a
(mail-interactive-insert-alias) to have it expanded in the mail buffer.
This relies on the mail-abbrevs.el package.
