I'm replying to the list so others can solve the same problem...

BBDB has built into it a solution in the bbdb-canonicalize-net-hook. It
works just fine for me and the documentation of the variable even includes
an example. Here's what mine looks like, if you need another example.

(setq bbdb-canonicalize-net-hook
      '(lambda (addr)
         (cond ((string-match "\\`\\([^@]+@\\).*\\.\\(CS\\.CMU\\.EDU\\)\\'"
                              addr)
                (concat (substring addr (match-beginning 1) (match-end 1))
                        (substring addr (match-beginning 2) (match-end 2))))
               ((string-match
"\\`\\([^@]+@\\)\\(blue\\|red\\|widget\\|stipple\\|be\\|mosh\\|twist\\|home\\)\\.seas\\.upenn\\.edu\\'"
 addr)
                (concat (substring addr (match-beginning 1) (match-end 1))
                        "eniac.seas.upenn.edu"))
               (t addr))))

I left the CMU example in there, just for reference. My part turns
anything that looks like "blue.seas.upenn.edu", "red.seas.upenn.edu", etc.
into "eniace.seas.upenn.edu" because all those machines are Sparcs or other
things which are based at eniac and I get tired of redundant network
entries.
