*That* was it!  I knew I'd see the "invalid read ``#''" thing
when switching from FSF to Xemacs, but I couldn't remember how I
fixed it.  I'm pretty sure the solution was to re-byte-compile
the failing .el's.  (I don't think I ran into this with bbdb,
but I did with a number of private thingies.)
