I found a solution for this. I replaced the mail-extr.el{,c} from
bbdb-1.50 with those from XEmacs 19.13. I did the same for
mail-abbrevs.el{,c} while I was at it. Works great now....

p.s. the .bbdb *is* interchangeable between Emacsen, of course....
