Responding to myself:
I was able to get a partial solution. I put all the individuals into
BBDB with a 'mail-alias' field. Then I retained the group aliases in
.mailrc. Those aliases seem to pick up the BBDB aliases just fine.
Now I have the advantage of BBDB while still having groups.
