the error seems to happen with 7.01 also), I get the following error.

This doesn't seem to be message unique. However, I was not able to get
it to happen when I didn't have byte-compiled BBDB files. I tried this
to get a better stack trace and the error doesn't happen. These files
were compiled with emacs 21.1.90. Byte compiling BBDB with Emacs 21.1
does not cause these problems. It seems that there is a problem with
the new version of Emacs - I will report this to them, but just
thought some one here might know what's happening too.
Just in case it matters, I have customized my vm-summary-format and
its value is:
