I've put things in bbdb-auto-notes-alist to do this but not as complicated
as yours, I'll look into your code, thanks!

As I currently have
...
 ("Newsgroups"
  ("[^,]+" newsgroups 0))

it's is probably partially my own fault - memo to self I must put my bbdb
settings in a consistent place, at the moment they're spread between .vm,
.gnus, .emacs, other .el files...!
