Probably not exactly what you want, but I though about doing
something similar and then decided to use gnuclient in
combination with a SSH-Clients available as Java-Applet,
which can be placed on your http-server.

I use the applet from MindTerm to logon to my machine where
my VM-Gnus-BBDB world is running ... never had any problems
from the places where I tried to use it and its safer than
the HTTP protocol ...
