Ah, I understand - I was trying to do it all by setting
bbdb/mail-auto-create-p in just the same way, but by failing to
override bbdb-always-add-addresses was falling foul of the prompts to
update existing records, hence my confusion leading to my doomed
attempts to toggle bbdb-readonly-p.  With that small change it all
works just as I wanted.
