No, I think that you are not missing anything. Currently you cannot do what you want. It seems to me that the code used by diary and calendar for these things is unnecessarily complicated (duplicating code) such that, in particular, it becomes difficult to feed things such as BBDB anniversaries into the algorithm for marking the calendar.
