I agree with you there. However, no-one is forcing you to use that
google account for anything. I'm on two lists which are routed
through Google, but I never check that gmail address. You can give
any address you'd like to use, and nothing really changes from the
current situation (apart that the good folks at BareBones will be
relieved to list administration).

Also, while you do need a *Google* account, you don't need a *gmail*
account.
