Replacing text with iso tags

I've been using BBEdit for a long time and have always been able to  
replace text with the equivalent ISO tag, (e.g. ® [registration mark]  
with ®).  Updating to 8.2.5, the & [ampersand] is red in the  
replace field and is not used in the replacement so the result is  
®reg;.  Is there something new in the application preferences that  
can allow the ampersand to be used in replacing or something else I  
can do?
