I've got it!  When you install BBEdit, a dialog should pop up that says,
"Are you a software pirate?  [Yes] [No]" And this check for multiple copies
running on the network would only be done for people who answered Yes.

It's so simple, I don't know why Bare Bones didn't think of it before.
