The common kinds of whitespace are spaces and tabs. In some contexts
linebreaks might also be considered whitespace.
Actually, another objection to globally replacing " +" with " " is
that if you had lines indented with spaces it would replace that
indentation with a space, so
indented line
would become
indented line
Whether that's a problem or not depends on the context (and no
context was provided in the original question, so it's hard to say
whether it's a potential problem here or not).
