This must be a bug, either in BBEdit or in PCRE. It looks like the matched substrings aren't preserved for capturing parentheses inside a lookahead,
so it's reading from an uninitialized buffer.

I don't know if this sheds any light, but I noticed that if I changed the character encoding of the document before executing the search, the gobbledy-gook looked different, but I still got gobbledy-gook no matter what encoding I used.
