The Regex Oddity thread reminded me of something I've been meaning to
ask about since 8.5's release. Does anyone have any pointers to URLs
explaining what's new, from an end-user perspective, in PCRE 5 versus
4? The BBEdit release notes mention named expressions, but beyond a
handful of terse lines I came across somewhere, I've not found any
good user-level docs that talk about what v5 introduced. I would
assume a major new release has plenty of user-level changes and
additions, but perhaps most of the changes are on the dev level....
(Incidentally, the change log on the PCRE site doesn't say anything
about named expressions, unless I just missed it; this raises doubts
about the completeness of the log.)
Also, why did BB move 8.5 to PCRE v5 instead of the current v6.7? I'm
sure there's a good reason (like a major architecture change that
would break a lot of things), but I'm just curious what that reason is.
