The tidy site has a binary for a slightly more recent build that has some performance improvements. Likewise, building an even newer version gets you a slew of performance improvements. Of course, you will only notice if you work on very large documents--I have a couple of files I frequently work with that hit the 3 MB range and I can also see the difference when I pipe the output of some of my work through tidy (also, very large docs). I look at it this way: why not build the newest if it only takes a few minutes? There are two reasons I use the Unix Filter rather than the built-in command: more options and it doesn't act on the entire document. Really, I like my 4 spaces per tab and hate that BBEdit's "Input is XML" checkbox defaults to off instead of my last setting.
