Ow. Can you post a small example, showing before and after? I imagine you've already saved the mangled document, but if not, you could do "Save As..." with a different name, and then you'll have a copy to mess with as well as your saved version from before the disaster. Did you have tabs in the original text? They could have been expanded to spaces. Do you know what you used as the last search and replace patterns before the accident happened? You might have hit "Repace All" (Command-= is the default). If you Show Invisibles, including spaces, do you see any odd-looking characters? When you say "variable numbers of spaces inserted" are the numbers the multiple of something consistent, e.g., 3, 6, 9, etc., spaces -- all multiples of 3? This might offer clue for walking back the cat. Anything else in the way of a regular pattern of the introduced errors (you might turn off soft wrap to see better)?
