Hi Dennis

You have hit the nail on the head and the weakest link is me. I had not realised there were two different balance commands. I tend to use keyboard shortcuts and can only assume that I sometimes use command-B and sometimes command-option-B which would explain why tags balance some times and not others. This makes sense because I cannot always remember whether the option key is involved and just use trial and error, in this case error.

Thanks for the help

Toby

Thanks for taking an interest. It is not a problem with a specific document it is that sometimes BBEdit balances html tags (as long as they are actually balanced) and at other times it won't balance them anywhere in any document. I can say "New>HTML Document" click between the <body> and </body> tags choose Balance and instead of balancing it beeps.

Jim can certainly answer this better than I can, but I wonder if you're using View->Balance when Markup->Balance Tags is better suited for your HTML document type. I am unsure of the specifics, but I do know that View->Balance may not produce the results you want when trying to balance HTML tags.

In my personal experience, Markup->Balance Tags seems to work very well. Every time I've ever had it fail has ended up being an error in my markup.
