That's what I did too. That is, even though I have a Gmail account, I
used the Mike Conley method (if I may call it that) to create an
account that would allow me to subscribe to Google Group BBEdit Talk.
I specified my preferred email address and password, and I was done.
Mission accomplished.

To my knowledge, it isn't necessary to have a gmail account (I'd
never have one, in fact).
If you go to <http://groups.google.com/>, click Sign In in the top
right corner of the window, click the 'Create an account now' link,
and then use your preferred E-mail address to create the account,
all the Google groups mail will be sent to that address. Worked fine
for me.
