As Patrick mentioned, the Text -> Zap Gremlins command is a great help  
in dealing with non-visible characters. Whenever I copy text from a  
browser or run into seemingly inexplicable weirdness with text from an  
unknown source, the first thing I do is check for those pesky  
gremlins. :-) See page 121 of the BBEdit User Manual.
