Lost edits how? You should be prompted to save whenever the selection  
changes on a dirty document (that's not open in an additional window)  
or when you close the browser.

It actually complicates things, but I understand the desire to work  
from an impromptu project, without having to create a persistent  
project file. We're working on it. :-)
