This error likely resulted from the mismatch between the specified encoding
and the file's actual contents.

Recent versions provide a "Read As" popup in the warning sheet, which you
can use to select a different encoding.

Alternatively, you can use the "Read As" popup in the Open dialog to open
the selected file(s) with a specific encoding.

(Though I can't be sure without seeing the file :) probably choosing
Latin-1 or Mac Roman would've worked.)

Text -> Zap Gremlins with the "Non-ASCII" characters and "Replace with
code" options. (I use this a lot... :-)
