One workaround is a clipping. The clipping window can always be
open and just as accessible as a HTML palette. And you can
assign a key command to any clipping.
I am not disputing your frustration over the change in palettes.
Just offering a very workable solution.

I'm not seeing a work around or better way of doing this other than up
to the menu, down to font style elements, over to selection.
