Revert to version 9 or earlier. The new behavior came in with 9, but as a 
transitional measure you could get the modal dialog back with an expert 
preference. In version 10, it's gone for good.

This has been hashed out loudly and often in the past couple of years, to the 
point that Bare Bones can't be any more aware of some people's feelings about 
this. They are committed to the new behavior. As a developer, you can 
sympathize with not wanting to support an infinite combination of "optional" 
legacy features, all paralleling the functionality of modern ones.
