I have recently switched to BBEdit. In getting setup I wrote a documented tool for using the bbedit tool as the command line EDITOR, which works for even the problematic software such as crontab. I know this is a topic that has been discussed on the mailing list before, but I never found something that was documented as well as I liked. Further, this also tries to be helpful about giving error feedback if BBEdit's command line tools are not installed, which can happen easily enough with the downloaded app, but even more so with the App Store version.
