You are correct, Steve. Once I changed my script to alter the
preference "StripTrailingWhitespace" without "Filing:" at the
beginning, it works as expected. The Preferences window continues to
show the old state, however.

Has there been a documented request for enhancements to make
preferences more scriptable? It would be nice to be able to read a
setting's value from Applescript, too.
