Thanks for that Chris! Now I know where that list of expert prefs. 'live'. So I just tried this: [Govindas-iMac-2:~] Govind% defaults write com.barebones.bbedit AutoShowFileList -bool NO [Govindas-iMac-2:~] Govind% ..quit BBedit, relaunched.. opened an existing file, as well as created a brand new file.. and both open with the 'show files' pane open. (I repeated that several times with various files.) Not sure what is going on here.. but on intuition, my next step is to ask, "Is there a command I can issue that will show me what an expert pref. is set to? Or maybe it is more useful to ask - perhaps BBedit is reading the pref. from one place, but writing it to another? Thoughts?
