When I try it out, it seems to work in html-mode where the text
between html-tags is selected, but not in any non-html language
mode...unless there is something I missed.
I need it for lisp-like language where the "tags" are "(" and ")".

Could you pls confirm that it only works for html, or maybe show a
working applescript example?
