Smashwords -- at least last I checked -- will only take Word documents for conversion to ebook format. Personally, that's enough reason for me not to use them; I have a few tools for creating EPUB books directly at this point, including Pages itself as well an under-documented Markdown-to-EPUB tool I wrote called Bookbind (https://github.com/chipotle/bookbind). And, I can use the ugly but functional Calibre to convert from EPUB to MOBI. (And, of course, BBEdit can both open EPUB files and edit Markdown, to keep things on topic.
