ATSUI does exactly what it did in the past. It delivers the same graphics. What
changed is that Core Text and the AppKit text stack now deliver better
graphics. It's not a degradation in performance, it's a decision not to
back-port an enhancement. That ATSUI wasn't going to benefit from advancements
in the operating system and hardware is what "deprecated" means.
I don't fault Bare Bones for making the best choice available at the time, and
I completely sympathize with the huge difficulty of rewriting a large code base
to take advantage of a different technology, especially in text rendering,
which is A Thing Man Is Not Meant To Know.
In the mean time, I still find BBEdit a pleasure to use on my rMBP. Either I'm
unusually difficult to annoy (I live quite well with the current Xcode), or my
eyes are going.
