In recent updates, BBEdit has exhibited a tendency to fix stuff that aint broke
I much preferred the diamonds, particularly in the Documents Drawer ...err I mean "Files Pane". Yes I can see the icon changes when the file is edited, but it's not as informative, nor as easy to see as the old diamonds.
